"I guess you're mistaken," she answered. Then, remembering herhusband's part in the affair, she immediately fell a prey to ahost of young suspicions, of which, however, she gave no sign.。， At last it came to the part where the lover exclaimed, "Be to meas you used to be."
。， The rehearsal ended for one day, and Carrie went home feelingthat she had acquitted herself satisfactorily. The words of thedirector were ringing in her ears, and she longed for anopportunity to tell Hurstwood. She wanted him to know just howwell she was doing. Drouet, too, was an object for herconfidences. She could hardly wait until he should ask her, andyet she did not have the vanity to bring it up. The drummer, however, had another line of thought to-night, and her littleexperience did not appeal to him as important. He let theconversation drop, save for what she chose to recite withoutsolicitation, and Carrie was not good at that. He took it forgranted that she was doing very well and he was relieved offurther worry. Consequently he threw Carrie into repression, which was irritating. She felt his indifference keenly andlonged to see Hurstwood. It was as if he were now the onlyfriend she had on earth. The next morning Drouet was interestedagain, but the damage had been done.
Drouet's assurance now misgave him. Shallow as was his mentalobservation, there was that in the things which had happenedwhich made his little power of analysis useless. Carrie wasstill with him, but not helpless and pleading. There was a liltin her voice which was new. She did not study him with eyesexpressive of dependence. The drummer was feeling the shadow ofsomething which was coming. It coloured his feelings and madehim develop those little attentions and say those little wordswhich were mere forefendations against danger.。，
"Don't say anything, will you?" he asked, giving the girl's arm agentle squeeze.。， He stirred again and went on to another subject. At last he feltas if his good-humour must find some outlet. Julia was probablystill out of humour over that affair of this morning, but thatcould easily be straightened. As a matter of fact, she was inthe wrong, but he didn't care. She could go to Waukesha rightaway if she wanted to. The sooner the better. He would tell herthat as soon as he got a chance, and the whole thing would blowover.
， "To be my wife, yes," went on the actor in a manner which wasweak by comparison, but which could not now spoil the tenderatmosphere which Carrie had created and maintained. She did notseem to feel that he was wretched. She would have done nearly aswell with a block of wood. The accessories she needed werewithin her own imagination. The acting of others could notaffect them.。，
